MY STORY
I am an Educational Psychologist, registered with the Health Professional Council of South Africa (HPCSA). In 2020, I completed my Masters degree in Social Sciences (Educational Psychology) at the University of KwaZulu Natal. I not only work as an onsite Educational Psychologist at a High School situated in Randburg, but also have a private practice in the afternoons in Bryanston, Sandton.

After obtaining my Honours in Educational Psychology at the University of Johannesburg in 2016, I worked at various schools as a Registered Counselor while also volunteering at a number of organizations. These include Childline and TLC Orphanage.

Prior to this, I had obtained my Bachelor of Arts, majoring in Psychology and Anthropology, as well as my Post Graduate Diploma (PGCE) in High School Education at the University of Witwatersrand.
As an Educational Psychologist, I hope to empower my clients with the tools and skills they need to cope with personal life struggles, expectations and challenges. I aim to provide a safe space for my clients to express their feelings, thoughts and emotions, while being heard, supported and guided. I believe that it is important to consider an individual’s journey from the point in which they first started and that nothing is impossible and with the correct intervention, greatness and healing can be achieved.
Psychotherapy
Counselling provides a safe space to explore one’s emotions, feelings, behaviour and thoughts that might be causing difficulty in life. It is a time that is set aside to explore these feelings and engage on a deeper level of one’s personal insight and awareness and provide coping strategies and techniques to improve these areas of difficulties.

Counselling often brings about improved functioning and personal growth in the long term. In the short term, since it is an emotional experience, it may be unsettling. However, it is necessary to achieve your goals. Counselling involves many different emotions and can often lead to a significant reduction in feelings of distress, increased satisfaction in interpersonal relationships, greater personal awareness and insight, increased skills for managing stress and resolutions to specific problems.

LIFE ADJUSTMENTS
Change can be difficult and hard to adjust to. It is important to learn the skills needed to allow yourself to cope through various life changes and adjustments.
PLAY THERAPY
Play therapy is an interactive and creative form of psychotherapy, used primarily for children. The child and psychologist work within a therapeutic space using a variety of aspects such as drawing, lego, creative art therapy, and the use of books and toys amongst many others. A child may not be able to express or process their own emotions and feelings vocally, therefore, play is used as a communication tool. Play assists the psychologist in understanding the child’s world, what they are experiencing and help them deal with their emotions.
Play therapy is an effective tool in helping children and families navigate through:
-
Anger and aggression
-
Social and emotional difficulties
-
Adjustment difficulties and management

Separation anxiety
-
Sibling rivalry

GUIDANCE AND SUPPORT SERVICES
LEARNING SUPPORT
Many children struggle with academic demands, learning difficulties or experience barriers to learning. Learning support offers a space for children to learn according to their learning style, and involves everyday learning and basic academic skills.
I have a special interest in assisting children to learn to read, write and develop their letters and numbers formation. Learning support offers children techniques on how to achieve the above, for example, they can learn this through sensory play.
PARENTAL GUIDANCE
Parental guidance assists, supports and guides parents in certain situations. It allows parents to be more effective in understanding their own emotions, behaviour and attitude towards situations. Parenting styles and discipline techniques are explored to assist parents in managing this according to their child’s needs. It is a space where parents can express their thoughts and be supported by equipping them and empowering them to deal with difficult situations.
CAREER or
subject GUIDANCE
Career or subject guidance provides a learner or a prospective student a space to focus on specific careers or subjects to undertake in the future. Various aspects are discussed to guide the individual in making a decision that is best suited for them.
Study skills and time management is a lifelong process of learning to manage learning, work, leisure and personal life in order to move towards a personally determined and preferred future.

ASSESSMENT OPTIONS
Career assessments

Career assessments are aimed at assisting Grade 11 learners, grade 12 learners and adolescents with their choice of study, career and employment. It focuses on exploring the individual’s potential and competencies, their career values, interest and motives. Furthermore, it considers the individual’s personality type, knowledge of the world of work and their career decision-making skills.

full global assessments
A full psycho-educational assessment includes cognitive, scholastic, emotional, perceptual, and behavioural aspects that will help assess whether there are any learning barriers. Various assessments and screening tools are used to gain information regarding the individual’s cognitive and scholastic abilities, their strengths and weaknesses as well as behavioural and emotional aspects that may be affecting them. This is an extensive process that can take anywhere between 6 to 8 hours over a 2 day period.

School readiness
Often parents are unsure if their child is ready to enter the schooling environment or not. A School Readiness assessment will assist parents to make an informed decision about whether their child is school ready. This assessment considers the child’s cognitive development, in order to ensure that they are ready to cope and progress with the school curriculum. It also takes into account physical, perceptual, and sensory-motor development, as well as the emotional, behavioural and social aspects of the child’s development. An assessment of this nature will enable and guide parents to make decisions regarding appropriate interventions, such as play therapy, as well as other interventions such as occupational therapists, speech therapists and audiologists to name a few. Should an extension of school admission be needed, even if the child is of compulsory school going age, parents will be guided with the application process through the necessary educational department avenues.

Concession assessments
A concession or accommodation assessment is administered to determine if a learner from Grade R – 12 or a university student, who experiences barriers to learning, requires additional and certain support or accommodations to help them achieve their potential.
The assessment results will accompany other relevant documents, screening tools and tests that are requested by the various educational departments or higher educational institution.
